What is Kitsch Fashion?

Before anything else, perhaps you would like a definition of what kitsch fashion is. Essentially, kitsch fashion is anything that is almost costume-y, whether it is vintage (like apparel from the sixties or seventies) or a knock-off that is so like but so not-quite-like the original that it may have been original. Generally, when speaking in terms of fashion, kitsch apparel refers to pieces of clothing, apparel or jewelry that are unique or one-of-a-kind. In other words, it doesn't matter that they seem tacky because when you choose just right, they can come out as funky - which is a very good thing.

Kitsch in fashion does, in fact come out the other side and become high fashion - remember the sudden resurrection of the stripy preppy sweaters? Layered tops - a tight-ish tank top with a loose top worn over it are also considered to be trendy now. Even stretchy leggings - supposedly the horror of the eighties - are coming back, only with less pattern and more monochrome. Of course, having become high fashion and rather commercial, these pieces could hardly be called one-of a kind anymore. Nevertheless, they toe the like between trendy and tacky enough to be considered kitschy, to be full of enough sentiment for the days long gone to be considered "in again" and therefore "knock-offs".
